The University of Zurich will be represented in the project by the GIS (Geographic Information Science) and GIVA (Geographic Information Visualisation and Analysis) Divisions of the Department of Geography.
The Geography Department has a strong focus on GIS and Remote Sensing with 3 of 6 Chairs in the Department falling into this area. Research in the divisions concentrates on the development and application of computational methods and experimental work on cognitive geography addressing problems in geographical information science. The research activities are carried out in a number of groups including Environmental data management group (nature reserve GIS, wild land fire modelling, GIS-based wildlife research); digital terrain modelling group (interoperability of DTMs, multi-scale analysis of DTMs); and cartographic visualisation group (automated map generalisation, web mapping, exploratory visualisation) and the KoMoNa group working on Cognitive Modelling of Navigation. Past and present research projects of the division have been funded by the Swiss NSF, EU Frameworks 4 and 5, EUREKA, USArmy ETL and industry. The divisions have considerable experience in the full range of scientific projects from those contributing to fundamental theory in GIScience through applied projects in the natural sciences to technology transfer working directly with industrial partners.
Key roles in TripodUZH will contribute it spatial data interpretation tools to caption creation and its long experience in testing for evaluation.
